And just to whet the appetite (and test the picture upload abilities of this blog), here is a picture from two weeks ago just before the final gear tree went in.

Testing the blog
First blog post, in preparation for putting up pictures, videos and instructions on how to construct a brass orrery using easily bought parts from the net, a dremel tool and superglue! It has just received its final coat of varnish (the orrery, not the blog) and is drying on my verandah. For all those waiting with 'bated breath (and I know there must be thousands of you), first completed pictures this weekend.

ReplyDeleteSo very cool.
ReplyDeleteIn my spare time this week I dug a hole.
This is so much cooler.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if in this model the axis of earth is at the same position wrt to sun. In other words it points in the same direction wrt to sun. Is that true. In that case we would not have seasons.
never mind. It was not clear in the video. Now I could see that you have a 32 X 32 gears to take care of the earth axis and you mention it also (calling the sprocket system).
DeleteThanks
Thanks. Your model is very interesting. How is the gear arrangement leading to earth rotating 365 times. Moon ratio is 12.8 which is roughly 365/28
ReplyDeleteIf I multiply that by 32/8 (the earth gear ratio) then I still dont get that. Pl explain.
